Clients can share a goal without sharing a weekly plan. Start with available days, session length, experience and recovery, then distribute suitable work.
Coaching Two Clients With the Same Goal but Different Schedules
Trainers · 26 October 2026

Define the goal
Build strength may mean basic-lift confidence, a sport task or a specific test. Ask each client what success means. Check history, screening, equipment and preferences before copying any plan.
The ACSM outline connects programme design to goals, assessment and resources. Matching a label is not enough.
A hypothetical comparison
| Question | Client A example | Client B example |
|---|---|---|
| Schedule | Two longer sessions | Several short windows |
| Constraint | Travel and fixed workdays | Limited uninterrupted time |
| Possible structure | Priority work across available days | Suitable work spread into short sessions |
| Review | Recovery between sessions | Actual completion of short sessions |
These are illustrative situations, not invented case-study results. Neither schedule is always better, and equal minutes do not guarantee equal outcomes.
Keep the goal, change delivery
- Choose appropriate movements and effort for each person.
- Distribute work to fit the actual week.
- Preserve suitable preparation and rest.
- Offer equipment alternatives within ability.
- Review response before adding more.
The ACSM 2026 position stand supports individualization and consistency in healthy adults. Athletes and clinical populations may need specialized planning.
Provide separate fallbacks
Agree what matters most in a disrupted week and what can be omitted. Do not demand every missed session at once. If disruption is routine, rewrite the baseline.
Compare each client with their own starting point. Shared goals do not authorize sharing photos, medical details, body measurements or attendance with each other.
Common questions
Can exercises overlap?
Yes, where appropriate. Load, sets, teaching and progression may still differ.
Should the busier client train harder?
Not automatically. Match dose to ability, recovery and goal, not punishment for limited time.
